FRIENDS, LEND ME YOUR ELEPHANT EAR

 ELEPHANT EAR FOLD DSCN8099
This Elephant Ear or Giant Cup, comes in different textures & colors and is named because of it`s size.
These "Rhodactis" eat food, including fish, by enclosing it in a large cup.
I have observed the one in these images many times during feeding. It can close quite rapidly & I would estimate the time to be faster than I can run & get my camera in my office next door.
Sometimes I run really fast.
As you`ll see in the slide show, I did get a shot of one eating the "catch of the day", a Yellow Watchman Goby.
I came home for lunch a few years ago, & giving my reef a quick look over, I noticed the poor Gobi, looking at me, as if to say, "DON`T JUST DO SOMETHING, STAND THERE".
You will also see a Maroon Clownfish with suicidal tendancies. Click on Planet Earth to see the Elephant Ear in action.
If you click on the flower in the header, you`ll see an Orchid show for Olivia, since she thrills us all with her daily marvels.
Please have a nice week.

Lovely shot. The glow on the edges is particularly spectacular.

Alas, a slide show is too much for my dial-up. OTOH, since I'm in a perilous state caused by the transition from vacation to work, perhaps it's better that I don't have to deal with nature, red in tooth and claw.

Good Morning Andif,
I`m sorry to hear of your "perilous state".
Tomorrow is "Ladies Night", so there will be something for you, posted tomorrow, to help you with your load.

What an amazing slide show. (Sorry, andif!) Life, death, near misses, danger, beauty, digestion, drama!

Nancy P,
I`m glad you liked the slide show.
I don`t think Andif would object if if she was able to see it.
It`s the daily life in nature.
I would not post anything that might be perceived to glorify bloodsport..
The amazing way this coralimorph gets it`s food, is akin to a Venus Flytrap, I would imagine.
Most of the time, it will snag edible particles floating by, & I would surmise the fish may have been in prior distress to allow itself to be caught, in view of the other fish pilfering from it`s maw.
Have a nice day, Nancy P

who knew Audrey had an aquatic cousin.

you've some interesting critters in those tanks head.

peace

dada,
AUDREY is a perfect name for that creature.
Last night, speaking of "interesting critters", a beetle flew in onto my desk.
I started taking shots of it, then noticed it had strange critters of it`s own.

Wow Head ... That is fascinating! It looks like a silk drawstring purse ...

How long does it take to fold itself inside out and back again. When those fish were swimming over the exposed insides (the green, w/ the knobby bits), could the elephant ear close on them quickly or does it move too slow? And what about the clown fish sticking it's head in to steal bits of food ... eek. And one more question -- is that bright shiny disc its mouth?

olivia said...

That should be, sticking its head in ... ugh ... :)

olivia said...

okay ... that'll teach me to view the slideshow and then not read your post! LOL ... carrion ... I'll be fine ... ;)

Knucklehead said...

Olivia,
"Carrion", sounds like what one Vulture said to the other.
I have an image of this creature called "PURSE SEINER", which is basically the same.
Yes the bright area with the radial lines is it`s oral disc, but a while later it will be called it`s sphincter.
I think we`ll go with 'oral disc', for now.
The clownfish may have a bit of an advantage over other fish, in that it can survive living in an anemone.
Some clownfish actually use a Giant Cup as a surrogate anemone.
I`m sure you`ll be fine.

olivia said...

Ha ... I'm not so sure ... ;)

Oral disc works for me too ...

Was just looking at the orchids ... lovely! Thank you!

Knucklehead said...

Olivia, I try & shoot orchids whenever I can, for your collection.
I`ll shoot some today here at home.
I call one kind, "The Screaming Chicken".
You`ll know why when I show it.

olivia said...

Ooh ... okay, can't wait.

I've got one orchid in bloom right now -- a white phalaenopsis like the ones in your photostream. It has been flowering for months now ... new bloom shoots start before the old flowers fade, and it has been constant orchids ... :)

Knucklehead said...

These flower for months also. That`s what`s nice about Orchids. Now cover your ears!!
I just came back in, from shooting the "Chicken".
The screaming woke one of the neighbors.
I present for the first time, The Screaming Chicken
The Screaming Chicken

olivia said...

LOL! That's the perfect name for it ... The screaming chicken orchid ... :)

Olivia,
Have you seen these before?
I have some similar ones of another color.
Everytime I go near them, the whole flock goes off like at a Turkey farm.
I`ll send some of the other color in a bit.
So the name is formal now?
I`ll send some "CHICKEN TENDERS"

Knucklehead said...

Here`s the other color I have of a similar Orchid, called "CHICKEN TENDERS".
I have no idea what chicken tenders are, btw.

Wow! More wonderful shots of bizarre creatures here at White Knuckles!

Alas, as with Andif, dial-up a no go with the slide show. Hmmm, I bet I could see them loading one at a time. I'll have to try that later.

Ah... for your elucidation; a chicken-tender is actually the one who delivers the chickens and the mortar up the scaffold to the chicken-layers.

Knucklehead said...

That would be a HOD chicken, no?
Do you have the same problem if I send you the slides as email attachments?

Unknown said...

I was able to view the elephant ear set fine by clicking on the next one using the browse, so I did get to see them all. (Yooost remind me not to use the wrong password.) One just has to be patient waiting for each one to load.

You got it! A HOD chicken!

Knucklehead said...

The chicken in charge of handing up the mortar, arrives in a [chicken} souped up car, called a HOD ROD.
I`m glad you got to see them.

Unknown said...

re: my last comment

I neglected to say that I enjoyed the sequence very much.

As chickens well know, it's always better to be souped up with a HOD ROD than a noodle...

One can prevent being hen pecked, if one is good when kanoodling.
